JEMS Editor-in Chief A.J. Heightman, fresh off the“Eagles” Major Metropolitan EMS Medical Director’s Conference in Dallas last week, is in Clermont, Ohio, presenting at the Clermont County Fire Chief’s EMS Conference today, and he’s enjoying the cold and icy weather.

His presentation topic is Situational Awareness and he is discussing some very relevant topics including:
1) The need for better EMS and Fire pre-planning to deal with new overdose problems and chemical assisted suicides;
2) Best practices in dealing with (and properly approaching) returning armed service members affected by post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuies;
3) New evidence on wrong-way drivers that enter freeways and “drive to the right” thinking they are in the fast lane when, in fact, they are headed the wrong way in the #1 (fast) lane;
4) Trend in cardiac arrest and overdose resuscitation;
5) The importance of continuous chest compressions without interruption; and
6) The value of early rehab and use of personnel and vehicle staging.

The annual conference is addressing therapeutic hypothermia impact, pediatric and overdose issues, new resuscitation approaches, and what to do “when EMS Goes Terribly Wrong.”
