“Bernie”, my Bernese Mountain Dog, had a busy day on Friday. He joined me at work in the JEMS Offices in La Jolla, CA where we met with Dr. Ron Stewart.
We then traveled to the San Diego Veterans Hospital for an afternoon tour of duty with his Therapy Dog squad, a team of six highly trained therapy dogs that work together to greet and provide comfort to veterans, their families and the VA Hospital staff.
On Friday, Bernie met a new team member, “Delilahâ€, a mixed Bernese and Swiss Mountain dog and spent two hours with the team visiting patients and staff members throughout the hospital.
His favorite visiting area is the medical resident’s charting room where the young residents are under tremendous stress charting their patients and their work activities. The residents really relax when the six therapy dog team members enter and lay a ton of love on them
At the end of his shift, Bernie and his teammates were awarded with a treat at the front desk as we exited the VA Medical Center. (The dogs are not allowed to be fed or given treats while “on dutyâ€)
